Don’t Incinerate – Innovate!

Ever since the Covanta Waste To Energy facility burned down in 2023, the county has been trying to figure out what to do with our trash. For now, we have to send our 4 million tons out of the county each year until we can come up with a long term solution.
The average American produces 4.9 pounds of trash per day, however our daily average is over 8 pounds. Needless to say, we have work to do!

2023 Report showing our three options for our waste: Recycling (19.3%), Incineration (11.9%), and Landfill (68.8%). Note that since the Doral Incinerator burnt down, the amount of garbage sent to the landfill is now about 80% of our waste stream, and will continue at that rate for the foreseeable future.

Now is the time for us to implement actions that will reduce our waste stream, also known as Zero Waste initiatives
