What would happen if the county moves forward with a new incinerator in Miami-Dade?
Looking back at the past, as well as information available, we’ve made a timeline of what that could look like.
2026 – The County decides on a location.
2026-2027 – Litigation over location begins, injunction issued
2025-2027
Litigation ends with county “on top,” permitting process begins/continues
2029/2030
Construction begins, length dependent on site chosen.
2033-2036
Begin commercial operations. [Miami-Dade County Solid Waste Management, Arcadis Report, pg.101, August 2023
2063-2066
Long-term contracts (generally 30 years) are often developed between the facility and municipality to secure a guaranteed waste stream. [Environmental Protection Agency Archive, Accessed 10/2/24]
Assuming an operational date between 2033-2036, Miami-Dade County could see itself locked into a 30 year commitment (until 2063-2066!) to generating or supplying enough waste to feed its new incinerator.
